Meet Our Coaches

Coach Don has been coaching field hockey for over 25 years. During that time he has been able to develop athletes to National Teams, All America recognition, NCAA competition, and multiple league/state championships.

"As a club coach at one of the top field hockey organizations in the country we are focused on improving our athletes on a daily basis."

A skilled athlete in his own right, Thomas grew up playing field hockey in New Zealand before moving to San Francisco in 2001. In addition to competing with club teams in California and as a graduate student at Old Dominion, he was also a member of the USA Junior National Team.

He began continue his coaching career at the Elite University, Christopher Newport, where he coached for 9 season, while simultaneously working with the Saints Organization.

Morales is a Stick Power Alumni. She went on to start her collegiate career at Syracuse University where she played three years and graduated with her Bachelors Degree. She then transferred to Christopher Newport where she finished out her collegiate career. She is now joining the CNUFH Coaching Staff, while continuing to work for the Saints.

Level 1 USA Field Hockey Certified

Coach Makovec is a celebrated figure in field hockey, renowned for her stellar career as a player and coach. She began her coaching career with the Saints and furthering her carrer at her alma mater, Old Dominion University.

She continued making her mark on the field hockey community by joining as one of the top umpires in the nation. She now officiates at the highest level of competition.

Her leadership, coupled with her ability to nurture talent and instill discipline, makes her a standout coach in the field hockey community.

Keeter played collegiately at Christopher Newport University. Following her collegiate career, she began coaching for Stick Power in 2017. in 2018 she then went on to coach at Warwick High School. In her spare time she refs, she has had the opportunity to ref at high level field hockey events such as Nexus and the Junior Olympics.

Level 2 USA Field Hockey Certified

Harper played collegiately at  Towson University in Maryland. Harper is a Newport News local. At Towson, she was a forward for the Tigers and contributed all four years. Her junior spring, she was named Junior Captain and her senior year she was named Captain.

Level 1 USA Field Hockey Certified

Miller being a Virginia Beach native continued to play in the 757 for the William and Mary Tribe. During her collegiate career she was able to become a catalyst for her team, clenching some of their most memorable victories in recent history.

She now continues to work with the Saints and grow the game in the 757!

Coach Jess came to SPFH in 2021 as the Lead Goalkeeping Coach and Director of Goalkeeping.

Coach Jess played at the College of William & Mary from 2016-2019 where she trained under hockey icons, Tess Ellis and Mark Egner. Wiggins is from the local area and played at Warhill HS where she was named second-team all-conference as a senior and had a career save percentage of 84%.

Coach Jess develops curriculum and training for all of our goalies ages 7-18.

Coach Zengel played at the Goucher college from 2014 to 2017. After pursuing her collegiate career she began coaching with Stick Power.  She is now one of the Lead Goalkeeping Coach and Director of Goalkeeping.

Outside of Stick Power, Zengel coaches for USA Field Hockey Nexus Program. Zengel also has been promoted to assistant coach of the Nationally ranked Christopher Newport University.

Wallen is currently coaching at Grafton Middle School. Wallen is also a full time personal trainer and sports performance coach. She is the fitness consultant for Stick Power

Bridges played collegiately at Christopher Newport University. She is currently sharing her knowledge of the game as a member of our coaching staff. Bridges is also coaching at Berkley Middle School in Williamsburg.
